Model Context Protocol (MCP): what it is and why it's changing AI agents

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol created by Anthropic that standardizes how AI models connect to tools, data and external systems. Instead of every integration requiring custom code, an MCP server exposes resources in a standard way, and any compatible client (such as Claude) can connect to it without a bespoke integration.

The problem MCP solves

Before MCP, connecting an AI model to an external data source or tool (a database, a file system, an internal API) required writing a specific integration for every combination of model and tool. That multiplied the effort: N models times M tools meant N×M different integrations to maintain.

MCP solves this with a common interface. An MCP server exposes its resources (data, tools, prompts) following the protocol; any client that 'speaks' MCP can connect to it with no extra code. The problem stops being N×M and becomes N+M.

How an MCP server works

An MCP server provides three main types of resources: tools the agent can call to take an action, data (resources) the agent can read for context, and predefined prompts that standardize how the agent should approach a specific task.

In practice, that means a company can expose its database, file system or an internal API as an MCP server, and any compatible agent, running locally or in the cloud, gains access to those resources in a secure and standard way, without rewriting the integration for every new use case.

Why it matters for business automation

For people building AI agents for customer service, lead qualification or process automation, MCP drastically reduces the time spent developing integrations. Instead of writing custom connectors for each system (CRM, spreadsheets, databases, internal tools), you can use or create reusable MCP servers, speeding up the delivery of custom agents and automation squads.

Frequently asked questions

Is MCP exclusive to Claude?

MCP was created by Anthropic, but it's an open protocol: any model or application that implements it can use it, not just Claude.

Does MCP replace LangChain?

They aren't direct competitors. LangChain is a framework for building LLM applications (including RAG and agents), while MCP is a connection protocol between models and external tools. An agent built with LangChain can even connect to MCP servers.
