Automation with n8n: how to build AI agents without writing code

n8n is an open-source automation tool with a visual interface that connects apps, APIs and AI agents without requiring code. An n8n workflow is built by linking nodes: a trigger starts the process, intermediate steps process and decide, and a final action carries out the result, making it possible to automate everything from customer service to complex sales workflows.

The anatomy of an n8n workflow

Every n8n workflow follows the same basic logic: a trigger starts the process, which can be a message received on WhatsApp, a new row in a spreadsheet, or a webhook fired by another system. From there, the flow goes through processing nodes, which can transform data, query an API, or, increasingly often, call an AI agent to interpret and decide the next step.

The final result triggers an action: sending a message, creating a record in a CRM, updating a spreadsheet, notifying a team. Because everything is visual, whoever builds the workflow doesn't need to write a backend to connect these pieces.

Why n8n is used to give AI agents 'hands'

A language model on its own only generates text: it can't, by itself, send a WhatsApp message or update a CRM. That's where n8n comes in: it connects the agent's reasoning to the real tools a company already uses, closing the loop between 'deciding what to do' and 'actually doing it'.

A common case: a message arrives on WhatsApp, n8n triggers an AI agent to classify the customer's intent, and depending on the agent's answer, the workflow takes different paths: it replies automatically, escalates to a person, or creates a follow-up task.

n8n vs. Make: which to choose

The most relevant difference between n8n and Make is the hosting model: n8n can be self-hosted, which gives more control over data and cost at scale, while Make is a closed platform hosted by the company itself. For technical teams that want to control infrastructure, n8n is usually the choice; for those who prioritize simplicity without managing servers, Make is a straightforward alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to code to use n8n?

No. n8n was designed to be built visually, by dragging and connecting nodes. Technical knowledge helps with more advanced automations, but it isn't a prerequisite to get started.

Can n8n connect to an AI agent such as Claude?

Yes. n8n has native nodes for calling language model APIs, including the Claude API (Anthropic), so any step in the workflow can use an AI agent to interpret data or make decisions.
